In late afternoon on Sunday, May 20, 2012, the path of an annular solar
eclipse will pass across the southwestern United States. The center of the
path of best visibility includes Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and
Grand Canyon National Park.
Both venues are making plans for public outreach for the event, with
assistance from the amateur astronomer community. Individual astronomers and
clubs are invited to share their expertise and join the staffs at these venues
to provide an enhanced experience and make this a once-in-a-lifetime
experience for the visitors to both locations.

The eclipse will begin in late afternoon, with the sun and moon setting
together as the eclipse is ending. The experience of viewing this spectacular
event in the gorgeous surroundings of these two venues should not be
missed! For the Grand Canyon South Rim, initial plans include a Saturday night
and Sunday night star party for the astronomer volunteers, along with the
Sunday afternoon solar event support. Several complimentary campsites will be
available on both nights for volunteers supporting the public outreach.
Support already lined up includes a number of white light and h-alpha
instruments set up with direct viewing, video augmentation for wider
participation
on site, and direct projection. Similar support is also in work at Glen
Canyon.
