Chris, et al; I was just looking at some star magnitudes that I saw inside the bowl of the Big Dipper last night. I used the Hipparchos data and found that the faintest star that I could see with direct vision was 6.46 and I got a hint with averted vision of a star that was 6.80. Not bad for an observer who will be 62 years old next month. The mottled detail in the winter Milky Way convinced me that I was very dark adapted.
