Yes, "generous" is a word that definitely describes Leroy Paller. He
also provided us with his C-14 for a full year's use during the Halley's
Comet apparition. This telescope supported SAC's involvement in the
"SpaceProbe 8" features on the Horizon show on KAET Channel 8 at ASU, in
which we achieved LIVE television broadcast images of the Comet (not to
mention unrehearsed interviews by Steve Coe, Chris Schur, Jerry Maurer,
Peter Manly, and myself). We were allowed to discuss a variety of
amateur astronomy topics on the air and show examples of several
people's astrophotographs and other observations of the Comet, as well
as presenting live views of the Moon and the planets (over the course of
the year's programs). I personally did a live broadcast of the Comet
via satellite feed from Kitt Peak (with assistance from Tom McGrath). I
don't want to forget Gerry Rattley and John McGrath, who also provided
important assistance from time to time, and the general support of the
membership, who were all invited to participate.
Leroy's C-14, equipped with a TV camera and an image intensifier
(donated by Litton Industries of Tempe), made the broadcast images of
the comet possible. To my knowledge, we were the only amateur astronomy
group in the nation (possibly the world) to repeatedly go on the air
with live images of Halley's Comet while providing our own "announcers"
-- (the OCA did one broadcast with CNN using a professional announcer,
and I have seen some videotape of the comet produced by the Boston
ATMs). I am most proud of the fact that we reached over 100,000
households in the Phoenix metro viewing area (each time we went on the
air!), and KAET received over 30,000 cards and letters about the shows
from the viewers. We actually had a number of people comment that they
saw our broadcast, and then went outside and SAW THE COMET!
