Rule of Acquisition #75: Home Is Where The Heart Is... But The Stars Are Made
Of Latinum

by Lieutenant First Class Alder Shimbrodus

"I need you to patch me through to Mr. Shimbrodus." Alder simply stated. He had
a night filled with run arounds, people telling him excuses that ranged from
the plausible to the most ridiculous. And now he stared at a man, whose
interest in his request was about as attentive as a rock being passed by.

"I?m sorry sir, but Mr. Shimbrodus is a busy man. He won?t be accepting any
calls unless it was by appointment or by family." The man said with an air of
arrogance that Alder instantly did not like as well.

Alder smirked, "I just so happen to be family. My name?s Alder Shimbrodus. Now
patch me through. Do you need some sort of proof?"

The man shrugged, "I?m sorry, Mr. Shimbrodus, but he can?t see you right now."

Alder shook his head, "I don?t care how you do it, but patch me through. You
don?t want me going through official Starfleet Channels. Because right after
I?m done, I will make sure that such measures were caused by you, and that it
falls all over you."

The man narrowed his eyes, "you Starfleet types always..."

Alder cut him off quickly, "you want to say something about Starfleet, you?re
more then welcome to lodge an official complaint. Not that anyone is going to
hear an arrogant prick like you. You said family, I am family. Now then,
transfer me through."

The man stiffened but then quickly closed the channel as the words,
"transferring" bleeped silently on and off. After a few seconds, Henry was on
the screen. He smiled, "you?re harassing my aide again, Alder?"

Alder smiled, "yeah, he?s a work of art. Now then, we need to talk. It?s
serious, so if you have any other plans, I suggest you either postpone them,
cancel them, or do whatever is necessary so that I can explain things."

Henry looked a little worried, "is everything alright?"

Alder shook his head, "no, it?s not. I wouldn?t harass your aide if it wasn?t."

Henry nodded, "give me a moment." The screen went blank and for a few minutes
Alder sat there, patiently waiting for his cousin to return. In that time, he
thought about what he wanted to say. Exactly what Henry needed to hear instead
of running the perimeter with him. Henry was always close to the late Denevan
family, and he hoped that Henry would take up his offer.

"What can I do for you, Alder?" Henry reappeared on the screen, etched with
worry.

"I, well, I need your help to run my company. I heard that you are running one
yourself, and I know..." Alder than gave a brief summary on what transpired in
the last few days. He then stated the offer of running the company.

"Wait one moment, Alder," Henry gave an incredulous smirk, "you can?t expect me
to drop my entire life for you. My family and my business are my main concerns.
And as a matter of fact, I already said no to the offer when the group
approached us. I believe it was Capelan that I talked to."

"Yes, but he?ll be the one running it and I need you to, well, oversee it."

"You don?t trust him?"

Alder stopped, having not actually thought about that. "I do, I mean, I think I
do. But look, Henry, you?re the only other one I can turn to. The other man has
accepted since he was in the very beginning eager to join. And you know I?m not
the trusting type with the other cousins, and frankly, you have the experience
that is needed to help run the company. And if you accept- by the way, you?ll
be an assistant, but a very important one- the Shimbrodus Company can merge
with yours so that you won?t have to worry about it too much."

"You made it quite clear in your explanation of the entire situation. It?s just
that," Henry paused for a moment, "Alder you don?t understand, I can?t just
drop everything on a whim..."

Alder shook his head, "I?m not asking you to do this on the spot. You will have
time to make arrangements. But Henry, I?m offering my company to you. You?ll
have everything my family has, even the multitude of houses they owned. No
strings attached. Since they?re under my name now, I can transfer ownership to
you. I know, I know," he said almost resigning to the offer, "I?m just
sweetening the offer. But please, I?m asking you to help me." Alder fell
silent, looking at Henry who in return gave a serious look.

Henry then spoke up after a few moments of seeming eternity, "I have to talk to
my wife about this, not to mention I need to look at things first here. I?m not
sure my business can do such a transition. And also..."

"This means you?ll help me?"

"Honestly, Alder, I don?t know. I really don?t."

"That isn?t a no, either."

Henry frowned, "no pressure coming from you, Alder."

Alder raised his hands visibly, "sorry, sorry. If you do, my company will make
any preparations you ask of."

"How long do I have to make a decision?"

"You?ll have about two months."

Henry looked up, "that?s not much time."

Alder nodded, "I know it isn?t, but it?s all the time I can give you until the
spot re-opens for someone else. I?m hoping you could make a decision before
that."

Henry became thoughtful, "and this might be a good opportunity to expand my
business. Especially on Deneva. And I thought someone had to officially be
there? Or at least rather, they can?t be in between anything to get the job."

Alder smiled, "benefits of having a family company- on Deneva, you get to
choose your assistants concerning your company, and they?re given a period of
time. And since you have a family and a company, business laws are good a
splitting hairs, you?ll have more time then the usual," Alder than stopped
seeing no point in trying to wax on more convincing facts for Henry to join,
"it looks like I don?t need to do much more convincing. I admit, I was
expecting more a dragged out debate with you."

"Yeah, I know what you mean. If anything, I would do it, I just need to get
some approvals first. Making a shift like this- or even thinking about one- is
a major step."

"Yes I know. Well, I?ve got to go. I appreciate your consideration on this, and
I do apologize for the sudden drop on this big of a decision. It?s just that,
things have been rather drastic as I told you."

Henry nodded, "I?ll talk to the misses, see what she says. If we can?t help
you, Alder, I?m sorry about that. But you?ll get a decision. I promise you that
much."

Alder nodded, "I hope you accept the position, Henry. It brings opportunities,
and who knows," he gave a smile, "you can now be on Deneva and not complain
about going home so soon."

Henry smiled, "we?ll see, we?ll see."

The screen went blank with the computer chiming in, "it is oh-six-hundred
hours." And once more just to make sure it was heard. Just in time for duty.
