Austechwriter is actually a small community although some list members would probably want to deny that. Many of us have been here for more than a decade now through thick and thin. We have some or lots of an idea about others lives on the list and empathise with each others joys and disappointments. We are a small fraternity in Australia and it is nice to have the group and even if some of us have never met, we certainly have a strength of 'friendship' that is stronger than pen-friends. The robustness of the discussions often digress from "technical writing" per se, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. The strength of expression suggests that list members are comfortable enough to really vent - a sure sign of being part of something greater than a work related forum. In many ways and instances, austechwriter is one of the very few places we technical writers can actually write creatively and with almost complete freedom of expression - is that a bad thing for any writer to be able to do? Relax, enjoy and of course; welcome! Contribute as you can, and don't get too upset if the noise is not just about technical writing.
