Nick, I am not sure how this works, as other have noted, in order to use Slack 
one needs an invite, you can’t just join. I don’t mind joining if I get an 
invite. Truth is, never heard of Slack before, but from my experience with 
other groups using social media was fun for a few days and then it started to 
trickle just like the e-mail group…I am not saying this to kill any initiative, 
just stating a fact.

By contrast, I am not happy with the list as it is. There is far too little 
participation to warrant it’s existence. There was barely any activity for 
weeks when I triggered this round of communication. It’s only real use, for the 
last few years, has been for recruitment, so it that is all it is, let it just 
be that.

 

It does not even remotely function as a professional association. It did at one 
time attempt to function as a professional association, and an attempt was made 
to keep the tone up, but repeated bad behaviour from some current and some long 
forgotten past members, that was not moderated, has killed any possibility of 
that.

 

My trigger for discussion earned me the normal sarcasm and put downs. When some 
of us do try to generate high level discussion, those discussions are routinely 
squashed by sarcasm and negativity, and you will have observed that the same 
sarcasm and negativity has been used to try to squash any enthusiasm for this 
idea. 

 

A more complex venue, properly managed, may allow those of us with different 
interest to follow them free of harassment. We can quite rightly tell anyone 
with the intention to stop discussion by using negative tactics such as 
ridicule, to butt out. They do not need to join discussions that do not 
interest them. This may or may not work, but what is the harm with 
experimenting?

 

Note the flurry of rarely seen names that has come with Nick’s suggestion. 

 

I think it’s worth a shot.

 

I am trying to find an article I skimmed past on a tech writing start-up, to 
trigger a conversation, and failing.

Nope, I don’t take it personally. J 

I find the email list perfectly adequate, but am happy to explore alternatives, 
which may offer new features we could really benefit from.  

I don’t know whether Slack (or, indeed, something else) might offer a better 
alternative. But I won’t know without experimenting.

We all know that email won’t last forever. Although I have no idea how long it 
will last, I do know that my Gen-X daughter barely uses it for anything other 
than her business.

I’m happy with my car. But I love some of the technology it includes that 
didn’t exist when I bought a car 25 years ago.

I too am a white man of a certain age. Happy to hang with anyone who’ll have me.

I don’t know you, so please don’t take this personally.

But this is the inherent tomfoolery of innovation.

The Austechwriter list serves me perfectly well the way it is. I don’t care 
that it’s 1990’s technology. 

I’m still driving a car – that’s 19th century technology. Nothing wrong with 
that.

 

Innovation is a good thing, but it’s a means to an end not an end in itself.

If innovation delivers something better, that’s great. If it simply delivers 
something different, I may not be interested.

 

So, I’m a white man of a certain age who hangs with other white men of a 
certain age. Phooey!

Look at us!  We are still communicating using a “list”…the same technology we 
were using when we first got the internet. We flirted with Ming and a few other 
options, but the reality is that human beings just don’t communicate well using 
social media style products. So we stick with 1990s technology.
