Translation companies use software that is designed for that purpose; well
actually, I think it is designed to pick up problems in terminology and
phrasing but at which stage (before/during/after) I am not sure. The
problems are then corrected manually by the operator. I know there was a
couple of sessions on translation some years ago at an ASTC-nsw conference.
I can recommend one fellow in Lane Cove Sydney (who does translation
services for SBS and ABC as well as govt work and private) and another lady
in Melbourne I worked with, but will have to go looking for that company
name.
As for the graphics, you can alter the size of graphics when converting to
pdf. That is a tolerable method of doing things. I know Word can be a
nuisance when large graphics are embedded, but it is more stable than it
used to be. If you can cope with it and it isn't presenting too much waiting
time, maybe stay with it as it is. Otherwise, pull them into a photo editor
and save as. That could end up being very lossy however. The other
alternative is getting hold of the original graphics and working from
them(?).
I think some of our esteemed list members have some better ways of handling
this kind of graphic problem, which I don't have to deal with very often...'

Hi Guys.
I know nothing about proofreading electronically. I am currently
"translating" a set of IT documents that have been beautifully written
except that the writer is clearly Asian, or the document has been auto
translated from an Asian language. There are numerous minor errors with
plurals and syntax, that the MS spelling and grammar checker is just not
picking up. This makes it a massive editing task if I have to do it all
manually myself.
Are there any utilities specifically designed to check auto translated
documents, or Asian syntax documents?
And while we are at it, the files are around 30mb because they are full of
bitmap graphics. Is there any utility that can pick these up, convert them
to something less expensive and put them back? If not, here is a niche
market for someone.
