[austechwriter] Outline numbering using user-defined styles

Using an already existing template I'm trying to link user-defined styles to
levels 1, 2 and 3 in order to create outline numbering. I link the styles then
click the OK button but the style I try to link to level 2 will go to level 4
and another style which has "Body" in its name keeps showing as Body Text level
even though I've linked it to level 3.
I can replace the user-defined styles with Heading styles to make it work but
that is not desirable. Can anyone help?
