Just changing the device won't necessarily solve the problem. Sound mapper
is what I think is the best choice but you have to have the correct source
set as well. If you re using a microphone, you have to use the microphone
source setting. If you are recording from a stereo or some such device and
are using line in, you have to have line in set as the source.

Hettie, the others are probably right, but, FWIW, I have my recording volume levels set pretty low, so often enough need to then amplify a recording before will really hear it much.
