Kristoffer, very frustrating. Such issues are not entirely unexpected with a
new, and sometimes not so new, computer.
I certainly would not be reinstalling Windows at this point. It is likely a
simple but obscure setting in sound card settings.
Is your computer a laptop or desktop? Are you connecting your mike through the
internal sound card? When you select the mike as the recording device in
Audacity, are you able to record anything?
Enough of the questions. You have no doubt gone through the following steps,
but it is easy to miss something. After reading your message I tried
connecting a mike to the sound card and did not get it right the first time. I
notice that you mentioned the speaker tab. That makes me wonder whether you
were in the playback rather than the recording tab. Try these steps and let us
know what happens:
1. Open sound card settings
2. You will land on the playback tab. Press control-tab to go to the recording
tab.
3. Arrow down to select the sound device you want to adjust (your microphone).
If it does not appear, you have probably connected to the wrong jack.
4. Tab until you reach properties and press spacebar.
5. Shift-tab once to land on the general tab.
6. Press right arrow once to get to the listen tab.
7. Tab once to make sure that "listen to this device" is unchecked.
8. Shift-tab to get back to the listen tab.
9. Press right arrow to get to the levels tab.
10. Tab through that dialog to set the level and to ensure that the mike is not
muted.
11. Tab to ok and press spacebar.

Subject: [audacity4blind] mic problem
Hi.
I have bought a new computer.
I've got a problem with the mic. I'm using windows 10.
the problem is that I can't do anything with the mic. change volume etc.
also I hear the mic through the speaker. I can't turn that of, change the
volume, nothing.
I tried the settings in the speakers tab, levels and the microphone there.
Nothing at all.
I turn it on, back of, then on again. no difference.
I still hear the mic.
The listen to this device is not checked.
What can this be?
Do I need to reinstall windows just to get this working?
/Kristoffer
