Hi both, thanks for your responses to help. I’m learning day by day.

Hi Brian
Depending on the severity of the fluctuations in level, I am going to suggest a
more tedious solution than Mark’s suggestion of simply using compression. That
said, if you try compressing and it sounds good, job done. But compression
should be used to refine the sound, rather than trying to fix significant
fluctuations.
I sometimes use the Sound Finder facility under the Analyse Menu as a starting
point. This is especially if there are a number of points where the audio is
clearly louder than the rest. Take the following numbers as examples only. If
the audio is peaking at 0, for example, look for samples that go above – say –
minus6. Make a selection around each peak and drop the level until it matches
surrounding audio.
I may repeat this process several times to level out the sound. By all means
check levels, but listen for inconsistencies.
If, on the other hand, there are no offensively loud segments but some that are
too low, amplify those low segments to bring them somewhat in line with the
rest.
Having made as much manual adjustment as your patience will allow, then apply
compression. My somewhat limited experience suggests that you can be more
aggressive with compressor settings for spoken word than music. In either case
though you, well I, want to avoid that pumping effect that can be introduced
with compression.

Subject: [audacity4blind] levelling volume
Hi all, I have a file in which the volume is somewhat inconsistent. I obvious
need to compress the audio to bring each speaker to a more consistent level.
Every youtube video concentrates on the visual soundwave. Using NVDA and Window
10, is there a way of finding out the average decibel levl of a file? What is
the simplest way of levelling out the volume of a track? Is compression the
best plugin to use. Obvious I guess I would need to use the amplify and
normalise effects to adjust the final volume. Has anyone donw a tutorial for
using compression? (I know, so many questions). Oh for audio description on
youtube.
