Hi Brian
Yes, there is an easier way. The issue you are facing is latency. That is,
when you are recording your second track, what you are hearing from the first
track is delayed by 400 milliseconds. Rather than making the adjustment each
time you record a second (or more) track, Audacity provides a facility for
adjusting for latency automatically.
For a delayed explanation, open the Audacity manual from the Help Menu and do a
search for the latency link. The approach you take to measuring the latency as
you make adjustments will depend on the equipment you have. To make
adjustments:
1. Press control-p to open Audacity Preferences.
2. Press d to find the Devices section.
3. Tab until you find the Latency group.
4. Best, at least initially, to leave buffer length where it is.
5. Adjust the latency compensation setting until the tracks line up. Note
the minus (-) in front of the number.
Getting the value right can be a tedious process. Note that the value will
also vary depending on the host you choose earlier in Device section of
Preferences.
Let us know if the above serves to confuse rather than enlighten. Making the
adjustments becomes second nature after having done in dozens of time (smile).

Thanks both for your advice. After much experimenting and editing I have worked
out my setting with audacity. I’ve now got to the stabge where I can
record, hearing my track 1 while recording getting no feedback from my
microphone. I then have to delete 400 milli secondsfrom my second track to line
it up. I’ sure there must be an easier way but 1 step at a time.

Hi Brian,
the delayed feedback may be caused by software playthrough being enabled in
Audacity. To check this, open preferences, select the recording category, then
move to the "software playthrough of input" check box. If it's checked, then
uncheck it.

Hi all, I’m sure this has been asked before by several peo9ple and I don’t know
if there is a simple solution. I’m guessing the answer will depend on what
system people are using.
My problem is delayed feedback to my USB headset when recording. Example: I
record my voice on a brand new project on track 1. As I speak my voice comes
back a split second later. Likewise when I record on track 2. Is this a problem
which can be rectified within Audacity or is is it a problem which can be
rectified in my system settings. I am using Audacity with NVDA on admittedly a
low cost laptop with a USB head set. Would nbe greagtful for any advice.
Many thanks in hope,
Brian
