Some laptops have jacks you can tell the software to use as a line-in or a
microphone jack. I don't know how well they work. As far as using something
else, there may be something besides this, but a lot of people use USB sound
cards with line-In jacks. Others may have specific recommendations; I haven't
bought one for years and the model I have probably isn't made any more. But
that may help you look.

Most laptops do not have a dedicated line-in jack, which is different
from a mic. jack. If one wishes to record with Audacity from an outside
audio source, such as a TV, radio, or phone, what USB to line-in
adapters are available to enable recording the outside audio through a
USB port? I have searched extensively on the internet, but have not
found this exact adapter.
