have you tried applying the filter curve effect, set to telephone, twice?
This makes the effect more pronounced.

the Filter curve effect has a telephone setting. (Press the manage button,
open the factory presets sub menu, and choose telephone.) Are you saying
that this setting does not sound very much like a phone call?
