A crude method:

1 Place the cursor where you want to insert the missing audio
2 Press Z to move the cursor to a safe cut position
3 SHIFT + K to select from the cursor to the end of the track
4 CTRL + X to cut the selection
5 SHIFT + R to record at the new end point of the track
6 SHIFT + A to stop recording and set the cursor at the stop point
7 Press Z to move the cursor to a safe paste position
8 CTRL + V to paste what you cut out.
