I've discovered 2 things I've been doing wrong after I read your mail.
Point 1 - I correctly selected the cilence and got the noise floor,
but didn't select all the audio again when applying the filter. This
ment that I was removing noise from the piece of cilence which I
selected which definitely wasn't the object of the game lol.
Secondly, the reason why the normallisation effect was unselectable
when I tried to apply it was because my playback was on pause (and not
on stop as it was supposed to have been).

cover what you already know, I will go through the steps. This assumes you
have several seconds of the unwanted noise without the material you want to
keep.
1. Select a sample of the unwanted noise.
2. Open Noise Reduction from the Effects menu.
3. Tab to Get Noise Profile and press spacebar.
4. Select all of the audio you want to process.
5. Go back to Noise Reduction and tab to OK.
There are a number of settings you can play with if the result is not to
your liking. Results will depend on such factors as the type of noise that
is causing the problem. I am not an expert on the settings - need to read
the manual (smile).
