Hmmm, very easy to increase reverb but more problematic the other way. A
couple of years ago I spent many hours trying to improve recordings where
speakers refused to use the microphone correctly. I was able to make some
improvement, but the end result was not something that gave me great pride.
Without hearing the recording(s) in question, I cannot make specific
comments. Depending on specifics, I used combinations of the following
Audacity tools.
If there was a constant background noise, Noise Reduction in the Effects
Menu can help. Depending on the type and severity of the noise, results
will vary. It is also possible that artefacts such as a flanging sound will
be introduced. For your purposes, this may be worth it in terms of clarity.
Either Equalisation or Base and Trebble, both on the Effects Menu, may help.
Equalisation is much more powerful, allowing adjustments of various
frequencies. However, Base and Treble is easier to work with. Boosting low
frequencies in particular may get rid of some of the reverb. Knocking off
some of the higher frequencies would also be wroth a try.
Others may have further suggestions and/or know of other tools that may
help.
