First of all, are the two tracks that you're experimenting with, the same?
Interestingly enough, you can always fool the amplify effect by simply
pressing Control+R (repeat effect) so that if the track has been
increased by 3 dB (to 0 dB) it will then be plus 3 dB...
Anyway, there are some numbers where amplify refuses to do its work,
despite the checkbox. Watch out for validation errors and alike.

checked on both, one will let me amplify to a level above 0, whereas the
