I added "edit boxes" to the list of interface enhancements we
may make to Compressor some time:

Have you tried Chris's Dynamic Compressor:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Compressor#alternative

It has edit boxes and is a more "standard" compressor than 
Audacity's.
