The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) seeks to fill the position of Dean of the
Graduate School of Engineering and Applied Science (GSEAS). This is a federal
government position in the excepted service. The expected length of the
appointment is three years. Deans may be reappointed for subsequent, three-year
terms.
Located on the scenic Monterey Peninsula, NPS is a graduate and
research-intensive university offering master's and doctoral degrees in the
applied sciences, engineering, operational and information sciences, defense
management, and international and security studies. Students include military
officers from all U.S. armed services, civilian employees of the Departments of
the Navy and Defense (DoN/DoD), and military officers from about 40 nations.
NPS faculty have made fundamental contributions to national security through
basic and applied research in traditional academic disciplines and in
nontraditional and interdisciplinary areas uniquely designed to serve the
defense and national security of the U.S. and its allies. NPS is a trusted
source of expert advice to the DoN/DoD and other parts of the federal
government. NPS partners with industry, national laboratories, and other
universities to conduct basic and applied research (classified and
unclassified) to support the technology development goals of the DoN/DoD.
NPS is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC),
ABET, NASPAA, and AACSB. NPS is located just south of Silicon Valley and in
close proximity to several universities and research institutions. Further
information about NPS can be found on the school's web page:
http://www.nps.edu<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/www.nps.edu/__;!!KwNVnqRv!XXy0ZX7oituuZcC_e5x8WOFZ-mycj5YdipwjQTz9BOduIIsaX8YXHFFYELQHxKs$>.
NPS is unique in that it is one of the few graduate universities in the DoN/DoD
that does STEM education and research . NPS students are usually mid-career
military officers who bring real-world defense problems for research focus, as
well as their strong motivation and intense work ethic. Within GSEAS students
perform research associated with the following departments and academic groups:
Applied Mathematics, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechanical & Aerospace
Engineering, Meteorology, Oceanography, Physics, Systems Engineering, Space
Systems, and Undersea Warfare. Their research is directly relevant to the
DoN/DoD. NPS has long-lived research programs such as the Consortium for
Robotics and Unmanned Systems Education (CRUSER)
(https://nps.edu/web/cruser<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/nps.edu/web/cruser__;!!KwNVnqRv!XXy0ZX7oituuZcC_e5x8WOFZ-mycj5YdipwjQTz9BOduIIsaX8YXHFFYb0K-fW0$>)
and the Center for Additive Manufacturing . NPS responds to the evolving needs
of the DoN/DoD by standing up research units, such as the recently formed
Consortium for Intelligent Systems Education and Research (CISER)
and the Naval Warfare Studies Institute (NWSI)
