Indeed the situation in Nashik is very different than what was anticipated.
I agree with Subbu, that as a matter of principle, we should not
segregate class-wise at this stage. However the points made by Arvind
and Rajesh about the content of the MoU and the issue of
chapter-centric class room transaction in the coming term are also
valid.
I learnt from Uma that it is now more or less decided that we will do
the trainings class-wise, from 12th to 28th April, with roughly 4 days
per class.
What we should do is, while we work class-wise, we should not strictly
focus on their text book structure/content, but instead try to give
them a broader idea of the topic(s), at a slightly higher level than
the expected level of the class room transaction. Also spend some
time on more general issues of science education and pedagogy.
The proposed workshop dates are a superset of the end-of-semester exam
duration at IISER, so I will be able to be part of these workshops on
and off. Our dates are 19--27 April, and my last lecture of the
semester is on 12th morning. The exam for my course is likely to be
on the 20th.

perhaps you need to focus on 4,1 and 2 in the first year. Ignore 3. that may
mean holding back inputs for class VII this year.
Also try to maximise the number of resource persons from group 4.
That will mean 660 teachers - if all of them are in place.
Now it may be possible that same class teacher is in charge of more than one
class (of say class 5 and 7) Such overlaps will mean that the figure of
220+220+220 may not really be correct. you need to check this out on the
ground.
I am not sure if it is a good idea to do class wise training at this stage.
Perhaps we should do a common training (at least the training curriculum may
be common) focusing on basic principles of science teaching with a mix of
activities for all three classes.class wise inputs can be given in monthly
meetings etc.
The 'basic principles' may be drawn from HSTP workbooks plus Maharashtra
text books.
Perhaps we need to focus on building motivation and interest in the first
workshop - rather than focus on class specific activities. I would suggest a
mix bag with some social science, language and math teaching ideas. (some
reading and arithmetic included) as most of these teachers are going to
complain that their students dont know how to read etc.

Please correct if this is wrong - every class has a class teacher who stays
with the same class from 1st to 7th grade. This teacher also teaches science
(and other subjects?). However, there is a single science teacher for 8th to
10th. Nashik ATC has 220 schools.
This means that over the next three years, we will be have to work with-

year's middle school teachers - separate workshops for 5th, 6th and 7th, in
April. Following this, we will have a workshop with the high school
teachers.
We need to reflect on this situation for a while and think of how to go
about doing things, given that our aim is to improve the teaching-learning
of science in a sustainable way.
Can we have some basic thinking about this and consider the way we want to
proceed? Then we can approach the Tribal Development Department people and
propose our plan. What do you think?
