FWIW Pluto also fails to render it correctly.

I think this is a source problem, not a target problem. The mail header of the 
original mail said "iso8859-1", but the umlaut was encoded as multi-byte.

So Pluto might be correct, but the source mail client (the header said: 
Messenger Pro/EmailEdit) failed to do the correct thing.
