Hilary Phillips (Sine Nomine software, author of RiscOSM) emailed me
the answer:
RiscOSM has an option to use Unicode fonts or ordinary Latin-1 fonts.
Unicode would be needed if the map has labels in other languages.
Peter must have had the Unicode option switched on when he generated
the drawfile from his map.
(*Why* didn't I twig that "\EUTF8" contains UTF8, which I do know is
Unicode? The \E must mean encoding, I guess.)
She suggested loading the file into her !Drawprint utility, which has
a facility to change the encodings to Latin-1. Solved.
Brings up a Q for Artworks, though. Supposing some exotic text DID
require Unicode, will Artworks be able to handle it?
This is probly somewhere on Master Würthner's to-do list!
Cheers. --jim
