having the government pick winners and losers is seldom a good thing.

Sometimes. And sometimes even when it's not ripe, as witness the
rapidly-cooling enthusiasm for self-driving cars.
Most of the current hype about electric aircraft is privately funded, and
it could well be headed the same way.
