I’ve been following that one too. Beautiful little engine. Nice shaft/blisk
integration. Single compressor stage though still. It’s hard to package and
improve on that limitation.

At $50K per engine cost is not negligible but I understand scaling effects come
into play like Reynolds number, clearances, etc and the closer the exhaust comes
to True airspeed the more efficient the system like a rocket. Whoever develops
a low cost turbofan will be very rich. The French are close with their DGEN
380/390 fan jet with 240LbF cruise and 570 LbF T.O. thrust. See link:

Cost really isn’t the ultimate issue. Turbo machinery can be produced in
quantities at relatively low cost when state of the art production technology
is employed. Unfortunately, the efficiency of micro turbines is poor due to
limitations in compressor and turbine performance at these scales. Free spool
and direct drive fans help somewhat but the core turbine performance remains
the weak link. For example, Technion in Israel have an interesting adaptive
cycle design under development that addresses some of these issues.

It was a few years ago so memory is fuzzy but the UK pack was a 2 engine unit
like the JB-10 in the link you sent.
IIf they can mass produce these micro turbojets the cost will come down. I've
priced these microjets from manufacturers all over the world for a personal jet
to commute around the US and they are not cheap. There's a guy in Taiwan that
sells them up to 180 LbF.. A 90 LbF sells for >$8K.

So I was mistaken, it looks like there is a CA based company also with a
functional jetpack. https://jetpackaviation.com/jetpacks/
Is this the one you saw? They aren't UK though, do you have a link if not?

No problem Pax, so it's plausible a guy built his own turbojet pack in his
garage. There's another type of jet pack that was built in the UK with
backpack mounted jets vs the wrist variety shown in the video. It cost the
investor over a million USD to develop it and was computer stabilized for a
short training period.
But the wrist version is a lot cheaper but requires a longer training period,
see the mythbusters episode, or maybe it was the post Mythbuster 'Adam Builds'.
He was trying to mimic Iron Man. Adam tried it on a tether but couldn't master
it in the short time in the show but an experienced person did it for him.
Then there's the theory you mentioned about a drone powered manikin, also
plausible.
Who knows/cares.

Because I can't read and thought you were suggesting that only rocket packs
were in use. Hard to edit a mailing list message, my bad.
I think the Gravity Industries pack is the only real jet pack even close to
market ready though. They have done customer training at LA in the past but I
doubt a customer would be doing this.
I thought they found "jet pack guy" to be a drone built up like a dummy? Maybe
that was just speculation.

So Pax,why do you say negative? You just gave credence to what I said, a jet

A so-called "jet" pack,actually a rocket pack, only has ~ 30 sec of propellant
but a literal turbo Jet pack has 10 minutes of fuel, oxidizer is free.
Need to see a close up pic of the guy.
