Through the Flight Opportunities Program you could build a relatively
inexpensive experiment and Nasa will pay to fly it on a microgravity
aircraft. Obviously don't go for the cooler-sounding option of a
flight on a suborbital rocket if you want to finish the project in the
next few years.
Propulsion, structures, and slosh are all very different fields, so
you should decide what kind of job you want before you embark on one
of those projects. The primary skill you would need for those three
fields are leak checking, sitting at a computer for long periods of
time, and understanding jerks, respectively.
