Note that such regulations will force industry to book profits that are
currently escaping to the atmosphere....

At some up-front cost, to detect and fix the leaks and get organized about preventing more. But yes, it may well end up being to the industry's net benefit in the long run, which should reduce opposition to the changes. Which is one reason why it's considered an attractive thing to do.

Natural gas isn't the only artificial source, and some of the others won't be quite that easy, but overall it shouldn't be too hard to get a large reduction. (There are substantial natural emissions, notably from wetlands, so there's no point in sweating over every last little bit. Currently about 60% of it is artificial.)
