Perhaps tungsten net?
Tungsten tends to be rather brittle once heated; in light bulbs, for
instance, the tungsten filament starts out ductile enough to be drawn
into wire and bent, and stays that way during shipping, but then after
having been used becomes the fragile thing we have all had the
pleasure of replacing. It also burns in air, which is why light bulbs
are filled with inert gas.
If you iterate on that idea a few times, though, you might get to Doug
Jones's suggestion of cradle landing (posted here back in January),
which seems eminently practical:
The cradle
could be slung from towers to have a long travel, see

....
The stage would descend to a preselected point with the plume
missing the cables, then the cradle maneuvers at several gees to
grab the nose hook. This could save thousands of pounds on the first
stage while moving the landing mechanisms to ground support
equipment with large mass budgets.
