I've contacted FAR and Build-A-Rocket to request additional info. I really
hope it isn't a requirement to build their rocket kit prior to competing in
FAR-MARS. Our team has been building a Methalox motor for that purpose. I'd
hate to have to find another 5 grand to throw at their kit. We're actually
looking for liquid methane suppliers if anyone knows any.
Lars, I've re-read their post. I agree with your assessment.
Sincerely,
Charlie

I was confused at first but think I understand now:
Phase 1:
Student groups purchase a $5000 rocket kit, made by FAR, and launch it. If
they succeed, I guess they go to phase 2?
Phase 2:
Student groups build their own, custom bi-prop liquid fueled rockets and
do an altitude competition with them.
Phase 3:
All-star student team gathers to build (presumably liquid) rocket that
breaks the karman line.
Is this correct? I had a hard time trying to figure out what it was about,
how it worked, and why.
If you have any details to share about this $5000 rocket kit I would like
to hear it.
Thanks,
Lars Osborne

Not sure how I feel about a $20,000 kit rocket. It seems like a shortcut
that encourages those who do not understand what they are doing to play
with cryogenic fuels and oxidizers. Could a kit rocket capable of
performing at FAR MARS even be reliably produced in such a short time frame?
