Just thought I'd drop a quick posting to the mailing list whilst I pick my
jaw back up off the floor...

The last ARMX6 to go out before Christmas is one with one of the big
curved screens we demo'd at the London show. Since the HDMI audio (and
video) work is now largely complete, I thought it'd be nice to install the
new ROM so that the system could benefit.

Benefit is an understatement.

In all seriousness, if Santa has deep enough pockets, order one of these
screens/setups now. It's staggering.

Thanks to the new ROM, the ARMX6 read the capabilities of the screen and
successfully output the super-high-resolution picture without any coaxing
whatsoever (ie. no need for my carefully tuned MDFs). It looked
outstandingly beautiful (as you'll know from the show).

Then I heard the audio.

My goodness! I hadn't realised the quality of the built-in audio system.
I knew it had better-than-average speakers thanks to its size, but the
clarity and sharpness (even from a 40 year old recording) were amazing.
OK, like all non-hifi audio solutions, bass could have been better, but
the mid tones, treble and clarity were startling.

Music played from CD via MusicCD perfectly, and I was even able to run
intensive background tasks (eg. backing up the entire SSD to SD card)
without introducing any anomolies. It even successfully mixed in (and
played) the "BigBuckBunny" video whilst playing my audio CD.

Sorry if this sounds like too much of a plug, but this was one of those
RISC OS "moments", and I had to share it.

Bear in mind that this experience worked better and more easily than a
modern Windows PC, and it is even more staggering. I know I should
probably expect that of RISC OS, but it feels really good to see RISC OS
flying high once again.

Let's hope 2016 is even more exciting! :)

Best wishes to everyone.

Andrew

PS, we hope to be able to release this on a general basis shortly, but
there are still a few minor things to sort out (audio selection user
interface, for example).
