The window that Hermes opens showing what's going on during mail
fetching would show that resolving one of the POP3 server addresses
was taking much longer than the others. I didn't time it but it was of
the order of 20 or 30 seconds.
I was connecting to the internet through my Virgin router and cable
connection, with that router set as the primary name server, but the
POP server that was taking so long to find was one of Virgin's own,
pop.ntlworld.com (for some mailboxes dating from when I first got the
broadband connection, just before Virgin took over NTLworld).
