FWIW I've tried two USB3 hubs from CPC and they both give problems

I avoid using them. As is, I do use a more reliable, but old and slow,
USB2 design, but would welcome something better/faster.

The most reliable way to avoid back-powering would be to use a lead with
the power lead cut/missing. I don't know whether these can be bopught,
or would need to be "adapted".

I'm aware of the above option[1]. However to me the most *reliable* way is
to have units that don't exhibit such flaws! With luck, lack of sales might
then also get the message through to the makers and sellers, and means the
user doesn't have to worry about a need for a 'special' lead!
