ArgyllCMS is primarily about color management. You've only got color
management when color spaces are known, and turning unknown device
color spaces into known colorspaces is what profiling is about.

So if all you've got is an unknown colorspace grey image, you either
need to establish scientifically what color space it is in, as well
as having a color managed setup to then evaluate and manipulate it,
or give up on color management for this file and simply adjust it
until it "looks good" in your situation.

Note that if you have a non-color managed environment,
then you don't know how much of the appearance is due to the
file, and how much is due to the display. In a color managed
setup there are two profiles involved here, one for the image,
and one for the display.
