short of looking at source or getting the software author to state it?
Seems like something that is very O.S. dependent. If you know the API's and
poke around enough, then it might be possible to intercept the application
to printing communications and figure it out.
There are complications though - typically the O.S. will have a native,
pixel oriented API, but then allow a "bypass" so that the application
can send output in printing description languages like PostScrit, PDF
etc. directly to printers or printing systems that can handle it.
