Hello Yves,
the problem seems to be semantics or definition in the sense that (according
to Wikipedia) a gamut is the range of colours a monitor or a printer can
represent.
Still I hope it is viable to say that the projection of the full RGB-cube
using the scanner's ICC-profile will define the volume in Lab-space, the
scanner can measure ( for the given setup, for which the ICC-profile was
derived) -- albeit this should not be called a "gamut". Admittedly, this
will involve some extrapolation into a range, where the profile was not
defined by IT8-target fields.

just so I understand better, an input device doesn't have a gamut per say but it as a specific spectral response (SSFs), right?
Maybe that's what Hermann is referring to?
