Nop! At minimum they are not compatible.
"Ideal"? The difference may lie in the device sampling (ti1).
I was thinking more at the profile generation stage and which profile and or gamut to use for the perceptual intent and gamut mapping.

Your last suggestion is interesting. I think, if I understood you correctly,
that you could start with a low patch count profile (maybe 300?) and use
that profile in a "second" pass, with 1000 patches?
Yes, the I1 Studio software uses at most 2 sheet of 8.5 x 11 with something like 75 patches. It's done in 2 phase, you first print a sheet, read it and I guess from the result it produce a second sheet to finalize the process.
