Yes, 51 steps is sufficient in my opinion. I print on an Epson 3880 and
have also made good use of the B/W test image that Keith Cooper has prepared
that you can find on his website here:
http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/test_images.html There are
some good gradients that you can look at when you print to test the quality
of your profile.

forum that is a number of patch that allows to obtain a very good profile
for a B&W print: "... all possible levels of gray of a print in
8 bit per channel..."
If according to your experience, 51 patches are enough, I trust.
