I think I know what happened.. PL2303 serial port and in the end was a
board telling it has a problem.

The trick was to run strace dispcal and notice the pattern.
Should the detection have timeout and should it tell what it is trying
at least when running in verbose mode?

likely it's looking through serial ports, looking for an instrument.
Given time it should finish and show you there are no instruments.
If you run it as super user, does it manage to open the Spyder 4 ?
Also, try running it with debug on:
dispcal -D8 -?
