I have an old X-Rite SP64 d8 (barely used) and multiple 0/45 instruments.
I was investigating the differences between the two types of geometries
recently (SP64 vs 530) on PANTONE swatches.
Result? I was surprised by the similarities between the two geometries on
THIS material.
I did not keep the measurements anywhere to include here, very small delta-E
as I recall...
So the difference may be material-specific. Ink of paper, in my experience,
even PMS 872 gold and PMS 871 silver are very close.

I think - basically yes, it's quite useless.
Mainly because all standard profiles are made with 0/45.
Lab values of the SAME object measured with d/8 and 0/45 will be quite
different, no matter what mode you will use - SPEX or SPIN (these modes also
can be very different).
So if you will make a profile with d/8 and try to print something with
ISOCoated-v2 reference then you will get... Actually I don't know what you
will get... Something. If you will try to check MediaWedge according to ISO
12647-7 with d/8, you will get OK result, if you will check it with 0/45
device (as stated in ISO standard), I think you will get completely NOT-OK
result.
I can imagine the only one profiling task for d/8 - if you intend to make a
predictable proof on metallic substrate (to simulate press on
printer) without white coating. In this case you will need to create both
press and printer profiles with d/8.
