The output device is used to convert from Lab to device values, RGB or CMYK.

thanks for your explanation. But I was not talking about inverting the
transformation from RGB to XYZ.
My understanding of colour management up to now was, that the measured
RGB-values from the scanner are converted to Lab (or XYZ) using the ICC
profile. Then the profile of the output device is used to convert these Lab
(XYZ) values to the RGB-values to be sent to the output device in order to
produce the correct colours. Lab or XYZ are the profile connecting space.
