Friends,

If any of you can help, I believe this to be a very worthwhile cause ("A
movement to recover gospel nonviolence as a norm for all churches"). For more
information about Every Church a Peace Church, visit their website at

Dear ECAPC friends,

I have a number of things to do today, but before any of them I must overcome
my reluctance and ask you to make a contribution to Every Church A Peace Church.

We have literally hit the wall financially, and there is not money in the bank
to pay my stipend this month, and Michael's half-time stipend is also in
question.

The meeting of the Welcoming Table and our Board in Indianapolis last weekend
was productive in terms of generating vision and program plans. The "Seeking
Peace" conference was attended by more than 400 people, and they were
energized! See this report on our commentary space
http://www.ecapc.org/newspage_detail.asp?control=1506 And a (really
understated!) report on the conference speeches of C. T. Vivian and Damu Smith
http://www.ecapc.org/newspage_detail.asp?control=1505

But these events, and the plan we are shaping to address the political
realities of impending African American dispossession in Katrina Hurricane
response, do not generate themselves. They are the result of daily, weekly,
faithful work by your staff. And while Michael and I are full of goodwill, and
at least decently generous, we too have to pay the bills at home.

ECAPC is growing; we are on the verge of launching our print newsletter, and we
have plans to put an organizer person on the ground visiting cities to support
the formation of local and regional groups to give church-based peacemaker
groups the personal and spiritual undergirding which they need. But it will all
grind to a halt if we do not receive contributions. For Katrina response, we
are working on a plan to twin, or partner, congregations, so that pastors,
churches and congregations in the disaster area can have the support of an
identified and committed congregation somewhere else in the country to help
them to rebuild their community. We are saying and will say (not everyone will
do this) that there is a link between Iraq and New Orleans; that money must be
TAKEN AWAY FROM imperial foreign military adventures and spent to meet human
needs.

You don't know what happened and what is happening in Hurricane Relief until
you read this article by Tom Engelhardt and Nick Turse.
http://www.commondreams.org/views05/0914-25.htm ECAPC keeps you in touch, day
after day, with this kind of indispensable truth.

So in a word, send what you can. You can contribute on-line at
https://www.iwdc.net/secure_orders/ecapc/donate.asp

Or mail a check to ECAPC, PO Box 240, Akron, PA 17501. Gifts are tax
deductible. Please accompany them with your prayers.

Sincerely,

John
