Greetings to you in the name of Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life. As you know more than 25 thousand people have been moved from the Supperdome in New Orleans to the Astrodome here in Houston. What people do not know is that thousands of others have come to our city. Every Houston hotel is full, every shelter is full. People are now being asked to welcome displaced families into their homes. We, Houston Mennonite Church, would like to host any Mennonite who is here or is coming to our city. If you know of anyone, please let us know. We have homes available for them. Also, United Way and Houston Interfaith Ministries will be taking over the feeding of the 25 thousand by next Wednesday, September 7. We need 240 people to volunteer to serve at every meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner), for the next TWO months. If there is anyone who can come to Houston for a week or more, please let us know. We will house them (five, ten, twenty or more people). If people can come to Houston in the next day or two, they should try to make it to the orientations on Saturday, Sunday and Monday (September 3, 4, 5). Training is needed to satisfy government regulations. As we wait to enter the distroyed areas of the Gulf Coast States with the help of MDS or any other agency, please consider donating your time here in Houston. Please, see below: Thank you, KATRINA RELIEF ASTRODOME FOOD SERVICE . Training dates and times (reminder. .. all volunteers must attend one of the following 2 hour training sessions) . We will have 6 feeding units (trailers) with each trailer having a team of 40 volunteers each per shift. Each of the feeding units will be supervised by 5 - 6 Disaster Relief Team members. Each trailer is capable of serving 20,000 meals a day. A normal menu consists of a hot breakfast, a sandwich type lunch, and a hot dinner. . We will receive a menu and food list sometime today. Once we receive that list, we will work with the Food Bank and others to supply the trailers. The Disaster Relief team will also work with us in ordering food that is not provided by the Food Bank and others. (They order from Sysco etc.) . Along with the meals we will provide personal hygiene bags. They need to be half-gallon size bags and include the following: Toothbrush and regular sized toothpaste Deodorant Soap Shampoo Wet Wipes I Travel pack size We are asking each congregation to enlist their members to make up these bags and drop them off at the'Second Baptist Church warehouse on Tuesday September 6th from 9:00 a.m. until 1 :00 p.m. Each congregation is encouraged to provide as many as possible since we are anticipating serving over 25,000 people.
