Sharolyn asked me to forward this information to the church, which I have
now done. (I don't know anything else about this worship practice. Maybe
some of you do?)

About Godly Play and "liturgy":

Liturgy means "the work of the people". It simply is how a particular
people practices creating a space to "come close" to God. They are those
practices that a particular community decides are the best way for them and
the most helpful way for them to experience God. There is no right or wrong
it¹s just the way that each community has found to be meaningful and
helpful and those ways that mediate God's presence for a particular faith
community.
Godly Play was created within the context of an Episcopalian community and
is an approach to faith formation and spiritual direction with children.
The ways that they come close are very important and meaningful for that
community. As a Quaker (or other faith communities with quiet liturgies)
the ways that we come close are different, so the Godly Play classroom
shelves and lessons look different than in an Episcopalian Godly Play room.
We don't have lessons on the Eucharist with elements but we do have a lesson
on the ways that we listen for God, on Friends Meeting for worship, etc.
Each Godly Play rooom will have lessons that reflect the practices and
important ways of that particular community - the practices that the
children will see and experience when they are with the entire community in
worship.
This evening will be grounded in a full Godly Play session using a Quaker
lesson on the ways we listen for God with a short debrief and then we will
have a conversation about developing the stories that would reflect your own
tradition as well as other ways that your Godly Play practice would reflect
your own practice. The focus of the evening will particularly be on
non-liturgical churches although I will suggest that we all have our
"liturgy" (the work of the people) - even Quakers!
This will be a delightful evening and I look forward to playing with you.

CARYL MENKHUS began her journey with Godly Play when Jerome Berryman spent a
month at the Quaker Meeting where she pastored. Caryl went on to be
nationally certified as a Teacher Trainer and continues the playful work of
pastoring Godly Play and allowing Godly Play to radically influence her work
as a Quaker pastor. Caryl hosts Godly Play training events as spiritual
retreats which is expressive of the heart of Godly Play. These events are
not just about getting information on another children¹s program but about
creating the space and providing the opportunity to experience God our
selves. Caryl spent 6 years of her childhood in Mexico and lived as an
adult in Nicaragua, Honduras Brazil and Baja California. Caryl has used her
Spanish in recent Godly Play work in Uruguay and Mexico and recently
returned from an international gathering of Godly Play trainers in Madrid,
Spain. She has a deep interest in bringing Godly Play to Spanish speaking
communities and furthering the work of Godly Play in Latin America. Caryl
teaches a class on Children¹s Spirituality at George Fox Evangelical
Seminary and has five children of her own.
