I use walk stitch to create a 'border' around the entire area, almost like a 'balloon' outline. The only time I do individual letters is on the giant stockings where the letters are far apart-but on regular stockings just outline the 'whole thing' about 1/8" outside all of it and don't worry about going 'up' the legs of H, N,M, etc.-just ignore that and it will look fine. Most fabric shops should have remnants of fake fur you can play with.
