Marty, This is Sharon. We used the leg fast frames. We had some pretty long names and each font was 1" on Boise State sweatshirts. We actually started the names 3-4 inches down from the top edge of the shoulder (we didn't sew any that were larger than a 2X) They turned out really nice! We found that size had to be taken into acount and also the style of the sweatshirt as the shoulder seams vary. So talking an average sweatshirt with a standard seam placement, we started at 3 inches on mediums and went as much as 4 inches on the 2x and larger. You may want to just print the design/name out and place it on the sleeve for the best look on the particular sweatshirt you are sewing on.
