We found that size had to be taken into acount and also the style of the sweatshirt as the shoulder seams vary. So talking an average sweatshirt with a standard seam placement, we started at 3 inches on mediums and went as much as 4 inches on the 2x and larger. You may want to just print the design/name out and place it on the sleeve for the best look on the particular sweatshirt you are sewing on.
