Terri, we get needle burs all the time...and check by running a fingernail up and down the needle tip...carefully or you do self acupuncture...if there is a burr you will feel your fingernail 'click' on it. Sometimes it happens from doing jackets-that's when we get more of them. The weight of the excess jackets hanging off the hoop can pull the hoop off to one side a bit just when the needle goes through, and 'bling', it hits the needle plate or rotary hook and makes a burr. Hats are also bad for this. Rare that you can see it without a magnifying glass, but the fingernail trick works great. Anytime I get a thread break I just run my fingernail around before I rethread-if I feel a click I replace it.
