We have been in the screenprint business for 18 years
and the best way to describe (for us) the placement for back numbers
is place the center of the number even with the bottom of the armpit.

So an imaginary line drawn from the bottom most point, where the arm sews to 
the body
to the same point on the other side, would draw directly through the center of 
each
number.

This works regardless of shirt size.
