Do they want the samples embroidered? You MUST get a 'setup' charge for digitizing, full price for the shirts, etc.-can't give them away! Even if it is just for 'blank' shirts-if you don't CHARGE for them, you'll never get them back, just excuses. If they do bring them back, and you don't get the order-you need to charge if it was a special order, or apply the cost they paid towards an order if you get it. It figures out that you are going to do 6 shirts to get an order for 40....maybe! I've had many customers over the years ask for prices on big orders, (screen printed) and then order a dozen 'as samples', at the QUANTITY price...and never come back. All they wanted was a dozen shirts but wanted a cheaper price! Only fell for THAT line once-but every year someone tries to use it. You have to charge freight also-you can't eat that expense! I would have to figure out pricing on the 'samples' at full price- explain to the customer that 6 shirts is STILL a 'complete' job to you-and she has to pay full for them. BUT if she does order the rest to make 40, you will refigure the bill to charge 'quantity' rate on all including the samples. And if she doesn't like the samples-she still pays for them! You will instantly know if she is only trying to get 6 shirts for nothing. Until we got the Amaya our standing rule was NO pre production samples on screenprinting-and the companies we used for embroidery orders also would NOT do samples...it is extremely rare to find any shop that does 'free' samples without charging an arm and a leg for it. Now for embroidery I find it much easier to setup and run 'one' hat or test on material for them to proof the design and colors-since I have to do that anyways. But I will NOT sewout on a full sweatshirt or jacket as a 'sample' unless they pay in full. Can't reuse it for someone else!
