Teresa, So true! In my travels, I've come across many a "self proclaimed" digitizers, some good- some not so good, who really don't have a problem digitizing or sewing licensed logos such as Nike, Polo, NFL or college teams, Disney, etc... That also includes "bootleg" copies of Dakota, Oklahoma, etc. designs. Most of these folks feel like their way to small to be busted. I don't have any personal experience to date (and I want to keep it that way) but I've heard way too many stories from quite a few and various sources about companies that actually have departments set up to go after those guys, big and small alike, to get payback. Everyone should do themselves a favor and not risk doing any copyrighted logo without some form of permission in writing. And be sure to get the name, signature, and management position held by the person giving you permission. If the manager doesn't feel comfortable signing, then it's his or her responsibility to go higher. Sometimes this "hassle" could mean losing the job. Just make sure you're covering yourself in the price for any fines and time lost in court that would come out of your pocket. Maybe your guy with the Chevy Truck might consider one of the many vehicles in any one of the stock design books. You can buy one design at a time if you like. If anyone out there has any personal experiences or has a friend or relative that works for one of those "BIG" companies that cracks down on the embroidery industry, I'd be interested in hearing more. I'd also like to know if anyone has had success acquiring permission from any high profile companies to do their logos for resale. I had heard that it costs $1000 a year for a license to resell Louisiana State University (LSU) logos plus royalties. However, since LSU won the national championships recently, they are not selling any more licenses until further notice. Oh well, easy come easy go. Good luck to you. When I couldn't find anything already out there, I was pretty sure. Just wanted to have another opinion with some experience behind it for my customer.
